So Much to Learn. So Little Time.

We are excited to offer a new look & feel to our class pages. We are adding lots of new offerings and repeat performances of some of our most popular classes. There’s much to do and learn between our open knitting, help sessions, workshops and classes.

It is our desire to have the most fun we can while teaching and learning. We also want you to love knitting and continue to knit for years to come. We know that when you agree to spend a few hours with us that you are claiming time for you! We have wonderful classes with qualified instructors. Our goal is to pass along whatever skills and knowledge we can in an enjoyable and supportive atmosphere.

Since we have re-arranged things a bit, here are some tips as you pick and choose your classes:

Categories: How are classes listed?

  • We offer beginners, new knitters and more advanced knitters a series of skill building sessions listed under the How to category.
  • Project classes are sessions where everyone in the class will work on the same project. The class introduces one or two new skills. Each session lists the basic skills you will want to have in order to participate. Unsure of whether or not you can do it? Ask us and we’ll help you decide.
  • Sweater classes have their very own category. Hey- everyone wants to make a sweater. Its big stuff this season.
  • Crochet classes are coming. We have a few and more are planned. Yes – even I am going to take the crochet plunge!
  • Kids Classes. Our totally popular kids series continues. Stay tuned for additional classes for teens as well.

How do I sign up?

We are thrilled to have our online registration process up and running. You can now view our class listings, make your selections, obtain confirmation as to class availability and pay for your classes all at once. Gotta love technology!

In order to make such miracles happen, we did have to move things around a bit. Now when you want to look at classes, you will head to the Classes section of our site. Within this shopping area you will see a department listing for classes. Just click on Classes and all of the offerings will appear. You can review the classes, dates and times, add them to your shopping cart or just skip around first and make your selections later.

Once you are done and your selections have been made, you simply proceed to the check out portion of the shopping area. You can pay for your class and will be all set to go.

Have questions? Prefer to register in person? You can still stop into the shop, register and make payment.

One special request: Our classes are wildly popular. We often have wait lists and full sessions. Before you register, we encourage you to review the dates and times classes are offered to ensure the schedule works for you. No refunds are given on class fees. If for some reason, you can not attend a session, please let us know as soon as possible. We can come up with alternative dates and times based on the upcoming class schedule.

What does it Cost?

There are several different ways we price our classes.  On and off, we schedule classes that are free meaning there is no class fee.  We do charge a registration fee to help ensure we have full sessions and individuals who have registerd do in fact attend the class.  This registration fee is either refunded the day of the class or credited toward your purchase of class materials (yarn, needles, etc.).

There are also classes listed with a "per session" fee where you pay only for the classes you attend.  Other classes have a class fee plus additional costs for your materials.  There are also several offerings where the class fee includes all of the materials.  Each listing will state whether or not the class fee includes materials, whether it is a per session fee, a free workshop, etc.

A note about materials:   It is our policy that you purchase materials for your class at the shop.

How many people are in a class?

Class size is based on the project or course offering. Some classes are less involved and require less one on one with the instructor. Several workshops are lecture type courses which also allow for a larger number of individuals per session. In general, our sweater classes are limited to 6 to 8 people. Some classes may allow up to 12-15 people.

Where are classes held?

All classes are taught at the shop at 2229 Monroe Avenue, Rochester, NY 14618.

When are classes offered?

  • We offer daytime, evening and weekend classes.
  • Each session has the dates and times listed. Some classes have more than one session listed. We also add new sessions and dates all the time. Our goal is to offer as many classes as possible so you should check back often for new dates and times.

Teacher Bios

Liv Hauck

Liv Hauck Liv has been knitting since she was 7 years old. Now, as a junior in high school, she teaches the kid's classes at Spirit Work. She has designed several purses hanging in the shop as well as models for her classes. While she has a sweater in the works, she admits quick, simple projects are her favorite. Liv teaches the Beginner and Level II Kids classes as well as private sessions.

Pamela Huber-Hauck

Pam fell in love with knitting in the early 80’s while living and working in New Jersey. After knitting lessons came workshops in sweater design, spinning, wool dying, etc. The neighbors used to shake their heads as she scoured her raw fleece in the driveway. While Pam’s growing family took her away from spinning, there was always time to knit. Almost 4 years ago, Pam planned to leave her corporate position to pursue a business around yarn and knitting. Certain she has made every knitting mistake possible, her favorite moments in the shop is when a new knitter brings in a completed project.

Joan Metzger

Joan is a talented knitter who brings experience and a quilter’s sense of color to Spirit Work. When she is not teaching, Joan is busy working on displays for the shop. She has a crochet background as well as knitting. We are slowly taking advantage of her crochet knowledge with our beginner classes.

Jeannine Sims

Jeannine has over 20 years of knitting experience with a broad background in traditional knitting. She attended Camp stitches in 2004, taking Galina Khmeleva’s Orenburg Lace design, a 3 day workshop on design elements of Orenburg shawls. She has participated in several New York Sheep to Shawl contests and has done test knitting for Cottage Creations. Jeannine enjoys working with the wonderful new knitters and those who just need someone with a bit more experience to help get your current under control.
